For guests who enjoy sea & sunbathing the nearest beach is Kommos being just three kilometer’s away. Here you will find miles of sand and sea and little else. This beach extends to the slightly larger village of Kalimaki.
Matala village is the nearest more commercial beach with loungers and taverna’s, all set in a delightful bay, plus excellent gift shops and a very good book shop and newsagents.
For the more adventurous Agiofarago gorge is really fantastic. Take the road south towards Kali Limenes, passing Odigirias Monastery, on the way. Agiofarago gorge is quite enchanting and after an hour’s walk the sea and beach will be a bonus. Travel further east along the coast where you will find hidden coves many of them totally deserted.
Phestos & Gortyn both highly important archeological sites are very close by, Phestos being the nearest.
Zaros is a popular tourist attraction set at the base of the Ida Mountains with a very relaxing lake, but best of all is the walk up the gorge.
Sivas has its own pottery where the potter has created turquoise and blue gifts and kitchen ware which are quite delightful. Just a few kilometers’ away towards Mires is a wonderful ceramic workshop displaying Crete’s famous traditional pots, a must for everyone.
The walks and drives from Sivas are unlimited, but quite simply your own adventures will give the greatest satisfaction.
This part of Crete is still largely untouched by commercialism consequently travellers from all over the world are welcomed into the hearts of the country people of Sivas. The most employment is still from the land whether it be sheep or goat farming, horticulture in the form of tomatoes and vegetables.
Citrus fruits and olives groves are abundant, with all the family being involved in harvesting. The mountains and hills around provide an array of wild herbs and flowers for everyone to enjoy and capture a perfusion of Mediterranean scents.
